FOTO Forecast maps just released and it's not good: Croatia also under threat

Croatia and much of Eastern Europe are set to experience a severe heatwave, with forecasters predicting temperatures could soar to 42 degrees Celsius (107.6 Fahrenheit). A powerful high-pressure system, amplified by an 'Omega block' weather pattern, is funneling extremely hot and dry air from North Africa across the region.

This phenomenon, described as a 'heat dome,' is expected to bring prolonged periods of extreme temperatures, with many areas exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. The highest temperatures are anticipated in the lowlands of Northern Italy and the Pannonian Basin, potentially reaching up to 43 degrees Celsius. Nighttime temperatures offer little relief, remaining in the low to mid-20s Celsius in larger cities, creating 'tropical nights.'

The heatwave, which began in mid-July, is now shifting its core eastward. While Tuesday saw record heat in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, Wednesday will bring the intense heat to Croatia, Serbia, and Romania. Thursday is forecast to be the hottest day for the northern Balkans and Eastern Europe.

Such prolonged exposure to extreme heat poses significant health risks, particularly for the elderly, children, and individuals with chronic illnesses. The lack of nighttime cooling exacerbates the danger of heatstroke and dehydration. Furthermore, the dry conditions are intensifying agricultural drought and significantly increasing the risk of wildfires across Southern Europe and the Western Balkans. Meteorologists warn that the pattern could persist, with potential for new heatwaves in mid-August.
