Vienna Hits Torrid 40.1°C, Setting New Temperature Record; Austria Experiences Unprecedented Heat

Vienna has officially broken its temperature record, registering an extreme 40.1 degrees Celsius (104.2 Fahrenheit) on Monday afternoon in the Stammersdorf district. This marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time in Austria's recorded climate history that the 40-degree threshold has been reached or exceeded in June, July, and August of the same year.

The new record surpasses Vienna's previous high of 39.5 degrees Celsius set in August 2013. This heat event is particularly notable because four out of the five days in Austria's 280-year temperature measurement history where temperatures have hit 40 degrees Celsius have occurred during the current summer of 2026. The national record remains 40.5 degrees Celsius, set on August 8, 2013.

Meteorologists are forecasting a continued wave of extreme heat across Austria and other parts of Europe. Forecasters indicate that new all-time temperature records could be broken not only in the coming days but potentially within hours, especially in regions like Vienna, Styria, Lower Austria, and eastern Austria. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be the hottest days of the week.

Authorities are urging caution, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, individuals with chronic illnesses, and children, advising them to take special precautions against the intense sun. The ongoing heatwave signifies a dramatic shift in Austria's climate, transforming it from a country where extreme temperatures were once rare to one experiencing its hottest summer on record.
