Four arrested in connection with attack on Morelos mayoral candidate

Authorities have arrested four individuals suspected of involvement in an armed assault that targeted Sandra Fernández, a candidate for municipal president of Yautepec, Morelos, representing the Nueva Alianza party. The attack, which occurred on June 30 in the Rancho Nuevo neighborhood, left three people dead and eight others wounded.

The incident took place at a multi-use sports court while people were watching a soccer match. The arrests were initiated after surveillance cameras from the C5 security center identified a vehicle used by the assailants. This vehicle was spotted traveling on the Tlayacapan-Yautepec highway.

During the apprehension of the vehicle's driver, authorities discovered a 9-millimeter firearm and a banner containing threats directed at Agustín Alonso Gutiérrez, a federal deputy and political mentor to Fernández. Two women who attempted to obstruct the police during the arrest were also detained for resisting authorities.

Later, security forces, with support from the National Guard and the Mexican Army, searched a residence in the Rancho Nuevo neighborhood of Yautepec. This operation led to the arrest of an additional suspected member of the criminal group.
