Four charged with terrorism for 2025 prison bombing in Ecuador

Ecuadorian authorities have charged four people with terrorism following a vehicle bombing that occurred outside the La Roca prison in Guayaquil on September 26, 2025. The National Unit for Combating Organized Crime led the investigation, which spanned ten months and involved numerous raids and forensic analyses.

The investigation included the analysis of explosive residues found at the scene, review of surveillance footage, and tracing of the vehicles involved. Biometric data was also used to identify suspects. During ten raids conducted in Guayaquil and Yaguachi, authorities seized two vehicles, 14 cell phones, clothing potentially used during the attack, and $7,000 in cash.

A judge ordered pre-trial detention for Ronny Alfredo S. G., Sylvia Leonor T. C., Luis Marcos T. P., and Ariel Alejandro M. T., the latter of whom was already incarcerated when linked to the case. The prosecution has 90 days to build its case. If convicted under Article 366 of the Comprehensive Organic Penal Code, the accused face sentences ranging from 22 to 26 years in prison for the act of terrorism.
