Restaurant in Guayaquil closed for pests and unsanitary conditions

Health authorities in Guayaquil, Ecuador, have temporarily shut down a restaurant in the Urdesa neighborhood following a citizen complaint. The National Agency for Regulation, Control, and Sanitary Surveillance (Arcsa) found significant hygiene problems and evidence of pests, posing a risk to public health.

During the inspection, officials observed widespread disorder and unsanitary conditions in the food preparation area. Walls, cooking equipment, and utensils were covered in thick grease. A broken pipe in the back of the premises was discharging sewage near raw ingredients like plantains, creating a foul odor.

Further violations included improper food storage, with refrigerated items left unprotected and exposed to the air. Staff were also found to be working in dirty uniforms and wearing jewelry in food preparation zones, contravening hygiene protocols.

The most critical issue was the clear presence of rodent droppings throughout the kitchen, including near cooking equipment, ingredients, and beverage preparation areas. Based on these findings and the risk to consumers, Arcsa imposed a temporary closure order.

The establishment will remain closed until its management addresses all identified deficiencies and demonstrates compliance with sanitary regulations, as mandated by the Organic Health Law.
