Four Dead in Horrific Virovitica Car Crash; One Dies Before Helicopter Evacuation

A horrific traffic accident on the northern bypass near Virovitica, Croatia, claimed the lives of four people on Sunday afternoon. The collision involved two passenger cars, leaving one vehicle overturned and both vehicles completely destroyed. The force of the impact was so severe that it left onlookers speechless.

Emergency services, including police, ambulance, and nine firefighters from Suhopolje with four vehicles, quickly arrived at the scene. Colleagues from the Virovitica Public Firefighting Unit also joined the rescue efforts. Igor Gotal, commander of the Suhopolje Municipal Firefighting Community, described the dramatic rescue operations. "We found two cars. In one car, three injured people were still showing signs of life. We proceeded to extract them. At the same time, we called our colleagues from the JVP City of Virovitica for assistance, and we worked in parallel with them, freeing one person after another and handing them over to the emergency medical teams," Gotal told Dnevnik Nove TV.

Despite the strenuous efforts of doctors and firefighters, two of the three seriously injured individuals who initially survived the crash succumbed to their injuries. Tragically, there was no hope for two passengers in the second car from the outset; they died at the scene. Ljiljana Rumenjak, spokesperson for the Virovitica-Podravina Police Department, confirmed that one injured person was transported to the Virovitica hospital for medical assistance.

The state road DC 538 was closed to all traffic. A detailed investigation, led by the Deputy County State Attorney from Bjelovar, is underway at the site of this unprecedented tragedy to determine the exact cause and circumstances of the collision.
