Four dead in Mexico City celebrations for World Cup advancement

Tragedy struck Mexico City as at least four people died amidst widespread celebrations following the national soccer team's qualification for the 2026 World Cup knockout stage. The fatalities occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning as massive crowds gathered to commemorate the team's victory.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada reported that over 1.4 million people participated in the festivities, primarily along the Paseo de la Reforma and in the historic center. She acknowledged the inherent risks associated with such large gatherings and announced plans to enhance security controls for the upcoming match against England. Three of the deceased were identified as women aged 19 and 48, and a 44-year-old man, who reportedly died from asphyxiation in the Reforma area.

The fourth victim, a man in his 30s, suffered an epileptic seizure and gastrointestinal bleeding after being taken to a hospital, ultimately succumbing to cardiorespiratory arrest. President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed solidarity with the victims' families, assuring them of government support. Authorities have implemented measures such as prohibiting alcohol sales in celebration zones and encouraging fans to utilize alternative public spaces beyond the traditional epicenter at the Ángel de la Independencia monument. Medical services attended to 1,615 individuals, with about twenty requiring hospitalization.
