Four from Mardin Artuklu University appointed to Syria's People's Assembly

In Syria's transition process, President Ahmed Shara announced the appointment of 70 members to the People's Assembly on July 1, 2026. This list aims to bring together diverse societal segments and experts, notably including four individuals from Mardin Artuklu University.

These appointees will serve in the constituent assembly tasked with rebuilding Syria. Among them are Dr. Abdulhamit Alawak, a faculty member in Political Science and International Relations at Mardin Artuklu University; Ahmet Zeydan, a 2026 graduate; and current students Mahir Alluş and Yasir Delwan.

Mardin Artuklu University Rector, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özcoşar, expressed pride in his university's representation. "We are proud that members of our university are included in the 70-member list of deputies announced by President Ahmed Shara in Syria on July 1, 2026," he stated. He congratulated Dr. Abdulhamit Alawak, an expert in constitutional law, Ahmet Zeydan, Mahir Alluş, and Yasir Delwan on their appointments and wished them success in Syria's reconstruction.

The 70-member quota appointed by President Shara includes 47 academics and experts from various fields, with 17 holding doctoral degrees. The new People's Assembly will serve for 30 months according to the constitution. Its first session is scheduled for Monday, July 6, where members will take an oath, elect a presiding board, and form a committee to prepare the internal regulations.
