Four injured in central Peru earthquake

A magnitude 5 earthquake rattled the central Peruvian region of Junín on Thursday, injuring at least four people in the Chupaca province. This area was previously affected by two earthquakes on July 18, which resulted in five deaths.

The Peruvian Ministry of Health reported the deployment of an Advanced Medical Post to the Chongos Bajo district in Chupaca. Ambulances from the Mobile Emergency Care System (SAMU) in Junín were also mobilized to provide timely medical attention to the four injured individuals.

Civil Defense reported rockfalls on transit routes and the collapse of an undetermined number of houses in Chongos Bajo, many of which were already damaged by the July 18 earthquake. The tremor, with an epicenter 19 kilometers southwest of Chupaca at a depth of nine kilometers, registered an intensity of V, causing residents to seek shelter.

A magnitude 3.5 aftershock was reported nearly an hour later. Some social media users suggested this was the fifteenth aftershock of the July 18 earthquake, noting collapses on unstable slopes in the Mantaro Valley's western mountain range.
