Four killed in Kenge motorcycle crash as mayor blames traffic violations

Four people died in Kenge after a tricycle and a two-wheeled motorcycle collided on National Road No. 1 on the evening of Aug. 31. The two drivers and their two female passengers died at the scene.

Local sources said the crash occurred on a narrowed bend, where a heavy vehicle had remained broken down on the road. The two-wheeled motorcycle was traveling from Bakali toward central Kenge when its rider swerved to avoid a vehicle approaching from behind at high speed. In an area with limited visibility, the motorcycle collided with the tricycle.

The crash marked the second fatal accident on that section of the road in less than two weeks. Kenge Mayor Noël Kuketuka blamed a combination of technical problems and risky behavior for the repeated incidents.

He identified four main dangers on National Road No. 1: vehicles that fail to meet technical standards, widespread disregard for traffic rules, speeding on urban and semi-urban sections, and deteriorated roads or uncleared obstacles that reduce the usable width of the carriageway. “There are four dead. Two motorcycles collided. One was a tricycle motorcycle and the other was a two-wheeled motorcycle,” Kuketuka said, describing the circumstances of the crash.
