Four-Million-Dollar Upgrade Transforms Tavela Settlement

For 74 families in Tavela Settlement in Korovuto, Nadi, daily life is changing through better roads, drainage, water services and other basic infrastructure. Fiji's Ministry of Housing has officially commissioned the settlement upgrade, presenting it as a way to improve living conditions and provide families with greater security.

The project delivered roads and footpaths built to Fiji Roads Authority standards, along with improved drainage, streetlights, water reticulation, sanitation systems and subdivided residential lots. The government invested more than four million dollars in the work as part of broader efforts to improve housing conditions and essential infrastructure in communities across Fiji.

Rita Kumar, a 60-year-old resident who has lived in Tavela for 17 years, said poor roads and drainage had been among the settlement's biggest challenges when she moved there. The changes have brought welcome relief after years of difficulty.

Kumar also said the improvements were giving families greater confidence about their children's future. For residents, the project represents more than upgraded infrastructure. It means safer surroundings, greater security and a stronger foundation for future generations.
