Four people die trying to cross Channel in small boats

Tragedy struck the English Channel overnight as four individuals lost their lives attempting to cross from France to the UK in small boats. French officials reported that a man, believed to be in his thirties or forties, died when his vessel capsized off the northern coast near Hardelot late Wednesday. A one-year-old child was among six others who sustained minor injuries.

In a separate incident, three people were discovered dead aboard another small boat that had departed from Dunkirk. Coastguard officials found the unconscious individuals near a breakwater early Thursday morning. Their deaths were later confirmed by emergency medical personnel.

A UK government spokesperson described each death as a "tragedy" and a "stark reminder of the dangers posed by criminal gangs exploiting vulnerable people for profit." These incidents highlight the perilous nature of Channel crossings, which have become a primary route for irregular immigration into the UK.

Data indicates that between January 1 and July 13, 2026, over 12,000 people crossed the Channel by small boat, a decrease of 45% from the previous year. Despite the risks, these crossings constitute a significant portion of illegal entries, with nearly all arrivals claiming asylum. The average number of people per boat has more than doubled since 2021, increasing the danger. In 2024 alone, at least 84 people died attempting to cross the Channel, according to UN figures.
