Four police officers face discipline over viral stop-and-search misconduct video

The Nigeria Police Force has initiated disciplinary proceedings against four officers implicated in a viral video. The footage captured the officers allegedly behaving unprofessionally and making derogatory ethnic remarks during a stop-and-search operation on the Lagos-Benin Expressway.

The officers involved, identified as one Assistant Superintendent of Police and three Inspectors, are currently in custody awaiting an orderly room trial. The Force Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Ani Iniedu, confirmed the proceedings in a statement released on Saturday.

The conduct shown in the video does not reflect the values of the Nigeria Police Force. Ethnic profiling and disrespect toward any citizen will not be tolerated, and officers who fall short of the Force’s standards of professionalism and respect will be held accountable.

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has directed the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State to conduct a comprehensive and transparent investigation. This inquiry aims to ascertain each officer's level of involvement and ensure that appropriate sanctions are applied. The police leadership strongly condemned the officers' conduct, stating it deviates from the Force's core values and standards.
