NPF orders probe into stop-and-search incident on Lagos-Benin Expressway

Nigeria's Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has ordered a thorough investigation into an incident captured on video showing police officers behaving unprofessionally. The officers, attached to a stop-and-search checkpoint on the Lagos-Benin Expressway, were seen acting improperly and allegedly making derogatory ethnic remarks towards a member of the public.

The viral video prompted swift action from the police hierarchy. Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, confirmed that the officers involved, including one Assistant Superintendent of Police and three Inspectors, have been identified. They are currently in custody pending an orderly room trial.

The conduct shown in the video does not reflect the values of the Nigeria Police Force. Ethnic profiling and disrespect toward any citizen will not be tolerated, and officers who fall short of the Force’s standards of professionalism and respect will be held accountable.

IGP Disu directed the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State to conduct a full and transparent investigation. The goal is to ascertain the extent of each officer's involvement and ensure appropriate sanctions are applied. The NPF stressed that the conduct displayed in the video does not represent the organization's values. Ethnic profiling and disrespect towards any citizen are unacceptable, and officers failing to meet professional standards will be held accountable.
