Four Teachers Arrested Over Drunkenness, Inflated Enrolment At Nabilatuk School

Four teachers, including the head teacher of Arengesiep Secondary School in Nabilatuk District, have been arrested following an inspection that found them allegedly reporting to work while intoxicated during school hours. The arrests were made by local authorities, including the Resident District Commissioner and Deputy Resident District Commissioner, with support from the Uganda Police Force.

During the inspection, which also involved district leadership, officials observed that the head teacher and three other staff members appeared to be under the influence of alcohol while on duty. They were subsequently arrested and detained at Lolachat Police Station pending further investigation. The inspection also uncovered potential irregularities concerning the school's student enrollment records.

Resident District Commissioner Linos Lotem Tumkori alleged that the school management had inflated student enrollment figures. "Apart from drinking during working hours, the school management is also exaggerating student enrolment. During our inspection, the Senior Five and Senior Six classrooms were empty, yet the enrolment records indicated that students were present," Tumkori stated. The school had reported an enrollment of 394 students, but a physical headcount revealed only 229 learners were present, raising concerns about deliberate inflation of numbers.

District officials issued a stern warning to teachers regarding the importance of maintaining professional standards. They emphasized that misconduct within educational institutions not only undermines the quality of education provided but also negatively affects the welfare of learners. Authorities are investigating the alleged inflated enrollment figures and considering administrative or legal actions against those responsible. As of publication, no formal charges had been announced against the arrested teachers.
