France Fire Situation 'Remains Very Unfavorable,' 250,000 People Driven from their Homes

The wildfire situation in southwestern France is described as "very unfavorable" by Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, as an additional 55,000 people were forced to evacuate overnight Sunday. This brings the total number of people displaced from their homes in the Gironde region alone to 220,000. Nunez characterized the situation on X as "another difficult night on the wildfire front."

A massive deployment of 2,500 firefighters, supported by 1,500 military personnel and around 1,200 police officers, is engaged in combating the blazes in the Gironde department. The fires are creeping closer to Bordeaux, prompting authorities to issue further evacuation orders for five localities southwest of the historic city. Gusting winds and arid conditions are exacerbating the efforts to contain the spread of the flames, which have been burning uncontrollably since midweek.

The affected area, primarily pine forests and scrubland dried out by successive heatwaves, has expanded significantly. By Sunday morning, an estimated 42,000 hectares (162 square miles) had burned in Gironde, an area seven times the size of Manhattan island. Firefighters are working tirelessly on the ground and from the air to slow the fire's progression toward Bordeaux, which at its closest point is now about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the metropolitan area. A second fire in the Landes region has led to the evacuation of 30,000 people this week, pushing the total displaced in the southwest to over 250,000.

Meanwhile, neighboring Spain is also grappling with severe wildfires. The Valencia region and areas west of Madrid have seen 116,000 people evacuated. A wildfire in Manises, a suburb of Valencia, resulted in one fatality on Saturday, marking Spain's first recorded death in the current series of fires. Earlier this month, 13 people died in a blaze in southern Spain, the country's deadliest in recent memory.
