France pulls out of Palantir deal over AI dependency fears

France is taking a firm stance against perceived digital dependencies, withdrawing from a contract with US firm Palantir. The decision, announced by French Minister Sébastien Lecornu, stems from concerns over the use of artificial intelligence developed by Anthropic, a US company.

Lecornu stated, "We must use our own AI models. We cannot accept new strategic dependencies in the digital sphere." This move comes after the US government, under the Trump administration, imposed restrictions on Anthropic's AI models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, preventing their use by "foreign persons." This action has led to speculation about the accessibility of these advanced AI tools for researchers like Andrej Karpathy, who was born in Slovakia and raised in Canada.

The US intervention, reportedly triggered by concerns from Amazon CEO Andy Jassy about potential security risks with Anthropic's Fable model, has sent ripples through the global AI industry.
