France's Atlantic Coast Wildfires: 63,000 Evacuated as Fires Rage

Thousands of people are being evacuated from France's Atlantic coast as raging wildfires consume vast tracts of land. A total of 63,000 individuals are being moved to safety, with the entire Cap Ferret peninsula under evacuation orders.

In the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, two significant wildfires continue to burn uncontrolled. On the Cap Ferret peninsula, approximately 20,000 people, including residents and tourists from campsites and holiday villages, have been evacuated. Many arrived by boat in Arcachon, a town south of the peninsula. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced that an additional 20,000 people from ten towns around Arcachon Bay must also leave their homes. "About 40,000 people have already been brought to safety or are currently being evacuated," Nuñez stated.

The fires have scorched an estimated 10,000 hectares, damaging 80 buildings and destroying 50. The blaze on the peninsula is suspected to have been started by a vehicle used for mowing roadside verges, according to AFP. Around 1,500 firefighters, supported by 200 fire engines and eight water-bombing aircraft, are battling the flames. Fortunately, no civilian casualties have been reported, though one firefighter sustained injuries.

A separate fire in the Biscarrosse area, also in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, has burned 2,500 hectares, prompting the evacuation of 23,000 people, primarily from campsites and holiday accommodations. This fire is believed to have originated from a delivery van that caught fire due to a suspected technical defect while driving on a forest road. Approximately 700 firefighters are working to contain this blaze, which remained uncontrolled as of Friday morning.
