France's Gironde wildfire deemed 'convective' and 'unprecedented' by Interior Minister

A wildfire raging in France's Gironde region has been described by Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez as a "convective fire" of a scale never before witnessed, exceeding the severity of the 2022 fires. This technical term denotes a particularly violent and unpredictable mode of fire propagation that is severely challenging firefighting operations.

"We had never seen this, a convective fire of this magnitude," Nuñez stated on TF1, characterizing the extraordinary blaze. He added that French civil security considers the situation "totally unprecedented" and significantly worse than what was experienced in 2022. The fire has already scorched at least 22,000 hectares and destroyed 53 houses.
