France Wildfire Forces 220,000 Evacuations as Blaze Spreads Towards Bordeaux

A destructive wildfire continues to rage in France's Gironde region, forcing the evacuation of 220,000 people since Wednesday. The blaze has consumed 42,000 hectares and is spreading towards the city of Bordeaux, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. He described the fire as unstable and self-fueling, highlighting the significant challenge firefighters face.

Nuñez stated that the situation requires a calm yet realistic approach. "We must look at things calmly, of course, but also realistically. We have a fire that is not under control, that is moving towards the Bordeaux area. It is an unstable fire, which is feeding itself," he told France 2.

President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to lead an inter-ministerial crisis meeting on the wildfires on Sunday morning, followed by a government session. The response effort in Gironde, a region known for its vineyards, involves 2,500 firefighters, 18 aircraft, and 1,500 soldiers. An additional 30,000 people have been evacuated from the neighboring Landes department.
