France wildfires: 220,000 evacuated as blazes burn 42,000 hectares

Wildfires continue to rage in France's Gironde region, forcing the evacuation of 220,000 people as flames consume 42,000 hectares and remain out of control. The rapid spread of the blaze, exacerbated by dry conditions and winds gusting up to 40 kilometers per hour, prompted authorities to issue new evacuation orders for towns including Marcheprime, Le Barp, Biganos, Mios, and Cestas.

Authorities have implemented partial closures of the A63 highway, a key route connecting France with Spain, and halted rail traffic south of Bordeaux. "At the beginning of the night, a rapid spread of the fire was observed. This was due to a combination of two mutually reinforcing factors: dry vegetation and wind, with gusts reaching up to 40 kilometers per hour," the prefecture stated. The fire's proximity, now just 15 kilometers from Bordeaux, has raised concerns, with the city's mayor, Thomas Cazenave, confirming the close distance.

Meanwhile, a separate fire in the neighboring Landes department near Biscarrosse is more contained, with 3,000 of its 30,000 evacuees now able to return home. However, a fire in Var, in the southeast, has reignited, burning approximately 3,250 hectares and leading to the evacuation of about 2,000 people. The Gironde fire, which began last Wednesday, has also seen unpredictable spread, with observations of "pyrocumulonimbus" phenomena, creating a firestorm effect.
