Free air ticket, hidden gold and a double-cross: Smuggling scheme foiled in Lucknow

A sophisticated gold smuggling operation, disguised as an offer of a free ticket home from Dubai, has been foiled by Lucknow police, revealing a plot involving internal concealment and a subsequent double-cross.

Two individuals, identified as Deepak Verma and Ram Pratap Dubey, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in an interstate syndicate. The syndicate is accused of recruiting Indians in Gulf countries, using them as couriers to smuggle gold concealed within their bodies, and then intercepting the contraband upon their arrival in India.

The courier, Mahboob Alam, who initially reported the theft, has been detained for questioning. Police are leveraging his cooperation to dismantle the larger network. During the investigation, Verma and Dubey allegedly confessed to stealing a capsule containing 203.92 grams of gold powder, valued at approximately ₹30 lakh, from Alam after his arrival from Dubai.

Police are continuing efforts to apprehend other absconding members of the syndicate. The investigation involved examining footage from numerous CCTV cameras and analyzing electronic evidence to track down the suspects.
