Free SHS Policy Remains Intact, GES Debunks Payment Rumors

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has firmly denied circulating social media claims that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy has been canceled. The service also refuted reports suggesting parents are now required to pay GH¢1,500 for chop boxes and trunks.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, the GES clarified that the Free SHS policy remains intact. The Director-General, according to the statement, has not issued any directive for parents or guardians to pay for chop boxes, trunks, or any other associated items. The statement emphasized that the Director-General does not possess the authority to cancel the Free SHS policy.

The GES strongly advised parents, guardians, students, and the general public against making any payments based on the unverified information spreading online. The service reiterated the importance of relying solely on official communication channels for accurate updates regarding the policy.

Furthermore, the GES cautioned the public to exercise care when encountering unverified information on social media platforms. It appealed to both the public and media organizations to cease the creation, publication, or circulation of false information that could potentially cause anxiety and confusion among students, parents, and the wider community.
