About Daily Graphic

Paper Of Record Government-alignedRead with context

Daily Graphic is a Ghanaian state-owned daily newspaper, published by Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL). It was established in 1950 by the British Daily Mirror Group and was nationalized by the Ghanaian government in 1964, with the Ministry of Finance currently registered as its sole shareholder.

As a state-owned newspaper, Daily Graphic regularly covers the government in a favorable light, detailing and encouraging national unity and government policy. It has faced criticism for perceived bias in its coverage of political events and for aligning with government positions. Historically, editors were replaced for opposing government policies, particularly after military coups. Despite being state-owned, it has been financially self-financing since 1999 and maintains a mantra of 'Truth and Accuracy Every Day,' establishing itself as a standard-bearer for journalism in Ghana. While Ghana generally enjoys a free press environment, journalists, including those from state media, occasionally face harassment and attacks, and press freedom rankings have fluctuated.
