About Daily Graphic

Paper Of Record State AlignedMedium credibility

Daily Graphic is a Ghanaian state-owned daily newspaper, published by Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL). It was established in 1950 by the British Daily Mirror Group and nationalized by the Ghanaian government in 1964. The Ministry of Finance is registered as the sole shareholder of GCGL.

As a state-owned publication, Daily Graphic has historically maintained an agenda-setting influence and has been criticized for aligning with government positions and covering them favorably. Editors have been replaced, particularly post-independence, for opposing government policies. More recently, the outlet faced criticism for its perceived neglect of the Anti-Gay Bill coverage and for running advertisements for an LGBTQI+ coordinator. Additionally, a new social media policy restricting staff from sharing opinions publicly has raised concerns about freedom of expression. While Ghana generally has a diverse media landscape and is rated 'Free' by Freedom House, journalists, including those from state media, have faced harassment and attacks, with impunity in some cases.
