French Alps Lake Restored to Pristine State

The Mercantour National Park, located in the French Alps, has launched a pioneering initiative aimed at restoring the ecological balance of Lake Scluos. This ambitious project, conducted in collaboration with the French Office for Biodiversity, focuses on revitalizing the aquatic environment of the high-altitude lake, which has suffered from a loss of biodiversity and diminished water quality.

The core of the restoration effort involves the gradual removal of fish that were introduced to the lake by humans. These non-native species have disrupted the natural ecosystem, impacting the water's purity and the native biodiversity. By carefully removing these fish, park authorities aim to allow the lake's natural processes to reassert themselves, leading to clearer water and a healthier aquatic environment.

This operation is significant not only for Lake Scluos but also for its potential to serve as a model for other high-altitude lakes in France. With approximately 600 such lakes across the country facing similar ecological challenges, the success of this project could pave the way for wider conservation efforts. The initiative highlights a growing commitment to addressing the impact of human intervention on sensitive mountain ecosystems.
