French restaurateur accused of exploiting migrants in 'squalid' conditions

Police in Élancourt, Yvelines, are investigating a 55-year-old restaurateur suspected of exploiting undocumented migrants. The French national, of Sri Lankan origin, was arrested on August 25 on suspicion of employing foreigners without legal status, subjecting vulnerable individuals to undignified housing conditions, and aiding illegal immigration.

The investigation began on February 6, 2025, following an unannounced inspection of one of his chicken fast-food restaurants by the Urssaf, the French agency for social security collection. During the inspection, two undocumented employees were discovered on the premises. Evidence suggested they were living within the restaurant itself, which was described as "squalid."

However, the employees informed law enforcement that they resided in an apartment in Versailles, for which they allegedly paid a monthly rent of 250 euros in cash. This detail suggests a potential network of exploitation extending beyond the restaurant premises.

Authorities reportedly discovered nine undocumented foreigners in connection with the case. The restaurateur is accused of employing some of these individuals and housing others in exchange for rent payments, all within what are described as unsanitary living conditions. The case highlights concerns about labor exploitation and substandard housing for vulnerable migrant populations.
