French Senate reacts to senator's racist insults against Mbappé

A Paraguayan senator's racist and derogatory remarks targeting French football star Kylian Mbappé have ignited a diplomatic incident, drawing a sharp rebuke from the French Senate.

Senator Celeste Amarilla, of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party (PLRA), directed offensive language at Mbappé, the captain of the French national team, following their victory over Paraguay in a recent match. Her comments, which included slurs and dehumanizing comparisons, were widely shared online.

The backlash was swift and significant. The president of the foreign affairs commission of the French Senate, Cédric Perrin, dispatched a formal letter to the President of Paraguay's Chamber of Senators, Basilio “Bachi” Núñez. In the note, Perrin expressed "consternation" over Amarilla's public statements.

Perrin emphasized that Amarilla's declarations, due to their overtly racist nature, offend the dignity of a man whose achievements are recognized globally. He further stated that such remarks undermine the fundamental principles of equality, human respect, and the fight against all forms of discrimination that underpin the democracies of both nations. The French senator stressed the particular gravity of these words originating from a parliamentarian, who bears a responsibility to foster respect and embody the values their nation upholds.
