French Wildfires: Major Blaze Contained in Gironde, Another Flares Up in Var

France is experiencing a dual wildfire crisis, with one major blaze contained in Gironde while another flares up with renewed intensity in the Var region. After nine grueling days, firefighters have finally brought the massive Gironde fire, which scorched 42,000 hectares, under control. This containment allows for the return of 90% of the 220,000 people evacuated since the fire began on July 22.

The crisis is not over, the fire is not fixed but we are progressing. We are getting our heads above water.

However, the relief in the southwest is tempered by escalating concerns in the southeast. A fire in the Gros Bessillon massif in the Var, previously thought to be under control, reignited on Friday. Fueled by gusty winds, the flames quickly spread, consuming an additional 1,000 hectares in just six hours. This resurgence has prompted the evacuation of approximately 2,500 residents from towns like Correns and Montfort-sur-Argens.

Authorities in Gironde express cautious optimism, with Prefect Sophie Brocas stating they are "getting our heads above water" but emphasizing the crisis is not over. Efforts continue along 240 kilometers of firebreaks, particularly near the coast in Le Porge and south of Lacanau. The focus remains on preventing further spread, with officials stressing that "contained" does not mean "extinguished."
