Friends and family bid farewell to poet, essayist, and university professor Vicente Quirarte

The Mexican cultural community is mourning the loss of Vicente Quirarte, a distinguished poet, essayist, and university professor, who passed away at the age of 72. Friends, family, colleagues, and admirers gathered to pay their respects and honor his significant contributions to literature and academia.

Without a doubt, this is an occasion that will warrant a new tribute to reflect on and re-evaluate his work, and also to make it known to new generations and keep his legacy alive.

A solemn guard of honor was held at the J. García López Casa Pedregal funeral home. The rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, and numerous members of the Mexican Academy of Language, including Silvia Molina and Jorge Ruiz Dueñas, stood in silent tribute before his coffin. Rector Lomelí emphasized the need for future tributes to re-evaluate and promote Quirarte's extensive work for new generations, ensuring his legacy endures.

The University is in mourning. He was a great university man who built bridges between literature and history, and between all the humanities. He also had a distinguished institutional role as director of the Bibliographic Research Institute and as a member of the Governing Board. He was always a university man deeply committed to his alma mater; we will remember him with great affection. The University loses not only a great academic but a great human being. But the consolation we have is his work to remember him by, as long as we continue to disseminate it and make it known to new generations, Vicente Quirarte will remain with us.

There are pending editions, he was coordinating those editions.

Xavier Quirarte, the writer's brother and a musician and journalist, confirmed that Vicente Quirarte's remains will be cremated. His ashes will be interred at a church in Mexico City's historic center. Plans are also underway to donate the writer's extensive library to the Mexican Academy of Language. "He was always very organized in everything... The clothes he was going to wear on the day of his funeral, the cufflinks he was going to wear, the glasses," Xavier Quirarte added, highlighting his brother's meticulous nature even in his final arrangements.
