FRIN donates 5,000 tree seedlings to Redeemer’s varsity

The Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN) has donated a total of 5,000 tree seedlings to Redeemer's University in Ede, Osun State, and established a 3.3-hectare plantation on the institution's campus. This initiative aims to promote afforestation and combat climate change.

The recent donation includes 3,500 tree seedlings, adding to the 1,500 seedlings previously provided in 2025. This effort is part of the vision of FRIN's Director-General, Prof. Zacharia Yaduma, whose administration is intensifying afforestation programs to restore degraded landscapes, conserve biodiversity, and mitigate climate change effects nationwide.

The donated seedlings consist of four economically important tree species: Khaya senegalensis, Terminalia superba, Gmelina arborea, and Tectona grandis. These have been planted across the university campus. The combined donation fulfills a commitment made by Prof. Yaduma following a request from the university's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shadrach Akindele, in 2025.

Furthermore, FRIN established the 3.3-hectare plantation to deepen collaboration on environmental sustainability, forestry education, and research. This project marks the first official assignment for the newly established FRIN Tropical Rainforest Resource Centre in Inisa. The tree-planting exercise was coordinated by the South-West Afforestation Programme Officer, A. B. Salaudeen.

This initiative underscores FRIN's statutory mandate to promote afforestation, conserve Nigeria's forest resources, and encourage institutional participation in tree-planting efforts as a sustainable response to climate change and environmental degradation. Under Prof. Yaduma's leadership, FRIN continues to strengthen partnerships with educational institutions and stakeholders to expand forest cover, enhance ecosystem resilience, and promote sustainable environmental management.
