From Abuja to Hangzhou: A Nigerian journalist's journey into China's development

The journey began with an unexpected phone call from the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) Publicity Secretary, Kemi Yusufu, relaying a message from the Chinese Embassy in Abuja. The embassy sought to connect with the author, Max Amuchie, for an event. Initially, the timing conflicted with a Rotary International District conference, but a subsequent meeting was arranged.

There was nothing dramatic about the meeting. No grand announcement. No fanfare. Just a conversation, a handshake and an invitation whose full significance was yet to unfold.

This meeting at the Chinese Embassy in Abuja marked the start of an experience that would lead Amuchie from Nigeria to Hangzhou, a prominent Chinese city known for its technological advancements and economic development. The initial encounter was cordial, involving conversations and a handshake, with an invitation whose full significance was yet to be realized. China, previously an abstract concept defined by news reports and economic data, was about to gain tangible form.

At that point, China was still an idea. A vast country encountered largely through books, news reports, economic statistics and the growing evidence of its presence across Africa.

Within weeks, the abstract idea of China transformed into concrete experiences. On July 21, Amuchie departed Nigeria for a three-week program. The journey included a layover in Addis Ababa before continuing to Guangzhou, China. Upon arrival, a local organizing team welcomed the group with smiles and enthusiasm, signaling the start of a new adventure. The group arrived at their hotel in Hangzhou on July 22, settling in after their extensive travel.

Within weeks, however, that idea would acquire faces, voices, roads, cities, lakes, factories, classrooms and conversations.

The program commenced the following morning with a lecture by Zhang Gangfeng, an Associate Professor at Zhejiang University. He provided an overview of China's national conditions, setting the stage for understanding the country's development model and potential lessons for others. This marked the beginning of an immersive experience into China's multifaceted society and economy.
