From engineer's vision to global powerhouse: The story of TSMC

The story of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) begins with Morris Chang, an engineer in his mid-50s who, despite a successful career in the United States, felt a sense of unfulfillment. Having contributed significantly to the American tech industry, Chang sought an opportunity to realize his own vision rather than merely managing within existing structures. This ambition led him to accept a challenging offer from Taiwan in 1985.

Taiwan, facing geopolitical and demographic limitations, aimed to secure its future by becoming indispensable in a critical emerging technology: semiconductors. The Taiwanese administration provided government support, research institutions, and talented engineers, but it needed a leader with a clear vision. Chang provided that missing piece. At a time when technology firms handled both chip design and manufacturing, Chang proposed a radical departure: a company solely dedicated to semiconductor manufacturing. This foundry model, initially met with skepticism, would ultimately revolutionize the global semiconductor industry.

Founded in 1987, TSMC initially focused exclusively on manufacturing, eschewing its own consumer products. As the complexity and capital requirements of chip production grew throughout the 1990s, more technology companies began to outsource their manufacturing needs. TSMC was perfectly positioned to capitalize on this trend, becoming a go-to foundry for numerous firms.

The true significance of Chang's model became apparent in the 2000s. Companies like Apple, focusing on designing their own processors, required a specialized manufacturer that would not compete in the consumer market. TSMC provided precisely this service. The partnership, initiated during the Steve Jobs era and expanded under Tim Cook, has evolved into one of the most critical relationships in modern technology, underscoring TSMC's foundational role in the global tech ecosystem.
