From Janitor to Principal: Taiwan's Oldest Educator Retires After 52 Years

Lu Songlin, widely recognized as Taiwan's oldest principal, is retiring after an extraordinary 52-year career dedicated to education in Yunlin County.

Lu's journey in the education sector is a remarkable story of perseverance. He started as a school janitor, working his way up through sheer determination and a passion for learning. Despite a challenging academic past, including being placed in a remedial class in junior high, he pursued further education. His former homeroom teacher provided him with an opportunity to work at a school, marking a pivotal turning point in his life.

During his tenure, Lu served in various coastal towns, inspiring students with his personal narrative, often telling them, "Don't fear a humble beginning; fear a lack of effort." He consistently adhered to his educational philosophy: "Education is nothing else but love and example." This guiding principle earned him accolades such as the "Confucian Temple Fragrance Award" and the "Shih-Tse Award" for outstanding educators.

His leadership at Wensheng Middle School during its most difficult period was particularly noted. Despite the severe impact of declining birth rates on student enrollment, the school, under his guidance and the collective effort of its staff, has managed to maintain full enrollment. This achievement has been lauded as a significant accomplishment in Taiwan's educational landscape.
