From Nuevo León, Sheinbaum says Mexico seeks good ties with US: “Cooperation always, subordination never”

Mexico wants a good relationship with the United States, President Claudia Sheinbaum said in Monterrey, but she delivered the message with a firm limit: “cooperation always, subordination never.”

Sheinbaum made the statement during her second-year government report in Nuevo León, where she recalled the special moments in Mexico-US relations and the good relationship between former presidents Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Donald Trump during Trump's first term.

“Here we are on the border, in a country that shares a border with the United States,” Sheinbaum said. She added that Mexico aspires to maintain good relations with its northern neighbor, especially during the country's patriotic month, but said subordination did not reflect the essence of Mexicans.

Nuevo León Governor Samuel García, a member of the Citizens' Movement party, welcomed Sheinbaum but did not accompany her on the stage. He later said on social media that he had received her with his wife, Mariana Rodríguez Cantú, and their daughters. García thanked her for working with the state on security, mobility, housing and health.

Sheinbaum also reported that 1.5 million people in Nuevo León receive government Welfare Programs.
