From Tambling, Titiek Soeharto encourages science and nature collaboration for future conservation

Tambling Wildlife Nature Conservation (TWNC) in Lampung, Indonesia, hosted a significant gathering of 21 Nobel laureates, Turing Award recipients, scientists, academics, and prominent global figures from August 27-28, 2026. The event served as a platform to highlight Indonesia's rich biodiversity and connect international thinkers with the conservation work that has been underway at TWNC for three decades.

Siti Hediati Soeharto, also known as Titiek Soeharto and Chair of Commission IV of the Indonesian House of Representatives, welcomed the distinguished guests. TWNC, managed by Artha Graha Peduli since 1996, was chosen for its diverse landscape and extensive conservation experience. Spanning over 48,000 hectares of forest and 14,000 hectares of marine area, TWNC encompasses lowland tropical rainforest, coastal forests, mangroves, lakes, and freshwater swamps.

Titiek Soeharto described Tambling as a space where Indonesia's natural wealth meets global science and collaboration. She stressed that conservation is not a short-term project but a long-term commitment for future generations. "Today, I believe Tambling (Wildlife Nature Conservation) can become something bigger. Tambling can become a living laboratory, where nature meets science, technology, education, and international relations," she stated during the event.

One thing that can be learned is leadership. This is the leadership of Tomy Winata. It is very pleasing that the government and the community have given the responsibility to manage this area for 30 years.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former President of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta, noted the importance of leadership, specifically mentioning Tomy Winata's role in managing the area for 30 years. He also emphasized the necessity of community involvement, stating, "You cannot do anything without connecting (collaborating) with the people who live here. They must feel it, believe in it, and then..." The visit aimed to leverage global expertise to enhance biodiversity protection, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
