FRSC urges motorists to reduce speed during rainy season

As the rainy season intensifies, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State is issuing a critical advisory to all motorists, emphasizing the need for heightened caution on the roads. Sector Commander Oludare Ogunjobi stressed the importance of reducing speed, particularly when approaching potholes, to prevent preventable crashes. Wet roads significantly reduce traction, making vehicle control more challenging, especially during downpours.

The FRSC is appealing to motorists to apply common-sense speed limits by reducing their speed below the posted limit when it rains.

The FRSC strongly recommends that drivers maintain double or triple the usual distance between their vehicles and the one ahead. This increased buffer provides crucial extra braking time, a necessity on slippery surfaces. Furthermore, proactive vehicle maintenance is paramount. Drivers should ensure their vehicles are "weather-ready" by inspecting essential components like windscreen wipers and ensuring tires are in good condition. Worn-out wiper blades must be replaced immediately to guarantee clear visibility, and all lights, braking systems, and indicators must be functioning correctly.

Beyond speed and vehicle condition, the FRSC advises motorists to steer clear of flood-prone areas and absolutely avoid crossing roads with running or flooded water. Recent alerts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Federal Ministry of Environment highlight Ogun State as being at risk of heavy rainfall and flash flooding this year, with predictions of a longer rainy season. If the rain becomes excessively heavy and severely reduces visibility, drivers are encouraged to park safely off the road and wait for conditions to improve.
