Fuel prices on Saturday, Sept. 5: Gasoline falls below 9.5 lei in several counties

Gasoline prices fell slightly on Saturday, Sept. 5, with prices below 9.5 lei per liter available in several Romanian counties. Diesel, however, remained above the 10-lei threshold.

Peco Online listed gasoline at 9.48 to 9.49 lei per liter in Arad, Bihor, Constanța, Dâmbovița, Gorj, Mureș, Sălaj, Sibiu, Suceava and Timiș. Diesel cost 10.1 lei per liter, although the lowest listed price was 9.97 lei in Lungulețu, Dâmbovița County.

Liquefied petroleum gas was cheapest among major cities in Cluj-Napoca, at 4.59 lei per liter, and Bucharest, at 4.60 lei. Prices reached 4.65 lei in Constanța and 4.67 lei in both Timișoara and Iași.

Compared with the previous month, the average gasoline price increased 0.2%. A 50-liter fill therefore costs 1 lei more than it did 30 days ago. The average diesel price fell 6.8%, reducing the cost of a 50-liter fill by 37 lei.

The price increases come after authorities reduced the diesel excise duty to the maximum level allowed by law. The National Authority for Consumer Protection has begun inspections at fuel stations nationwide. Inspectors are examining operators’ commercial markups and how prices have changed from one day to the next.

Romania ranks 16th in the European Union for the lowest gasoline prices and 14th for diesel. Excluding taxes, it ranks 10th for gasoline and 12th for diesel.
