Fuel station fraud, utility meter issues directly impact citizens' wallets, lawmakers say

During a National Assembly Standing Committee meeting, lawmakers discussed proposed amendments to several key laws, including those governing trade, competition, and consumer rights.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade presented the government's proposals, which aim to refine regulations on market competition, address emerging market behaviors, and align with administrative penalty procedures. For consumer protection, the proposals seek to resolve overlaps with personal data protection laws and streamline state administrative structures.

Concerns were raised about the potential impact of digital platforms on promotional activities, including cross-border promotions. Lawmakers stressed the need for clear definitions to avoid ambiguity and practical difficulties in implementing these regulations. They also called for a review of prohibited anti-competitive practices and the abuse of dominant market positions.

A significant focus was placed on consumer protection, with a call to ensure consistency with laws on personal data and electronic transactions. Lawmakers emphasized the importance of transparency and clarifying the responsibilities of businesses when using algorithms or interfaces that might unduly influence consumer choices.
