Fuel tanker overturns on Lagos road

Emergency crews contained a fuel tanker accident on Ijako Road, inward Oke Oso, along the Ajah Expressway in Epe, Lagos, after a Mack tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit overturned.

The crash occurred while the tanker was climbing Ijako Hill. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said preliminary findings indicated that the vehicle’s propeller detached from its joint, causing it to lose momentum and fall on its side. One compartment began leaking.

There were no reported fatalities or injuries. Prior to LASEMA’s arrival, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Oke Oso Station, had commenced containment measures to prevent fire outbreak and environmental hazard.

LASEMA received a distress alert at 11:32 a.m. and dispatched its Whales Team from the Epe base. The team arrived four minutes later. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service had already begun containment measures to prevent a fire and environmental damage.

An empty tanker has been mobilized for the safe transloading of the product, after which recovery of the fallen truck will commence.

Authorities reported no fatalities or injuries. LASEMA, the fire service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and representatives of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers coordinated the response under the Incident Command System.

Traffic officials managed the road to protect motorists and prevent secondary incidents. An empty tanker was mobilised to transfer the fuel before crews could recover the fallen truck. LASEMA advised motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and avoid the immediate area while the operation continued.
