Fugitive arrested in Jamaica for murder in Dominican Republic

Jhovanny de Jesús Metz Cruz, also known as "Macho," has been captured in Jamaica, four months after he became a fugitive in the murder of driver Deivy Carlos Abreu Quezada. Dominican National Police reported that Metz Cruz likely entered Jamaica illegally by sea, using a false name. Dominican and Jamaican authorities, in coordination with Interpol, tracked him down.

Metz Cruz, 28, was sought with an Interpol Red Notice and an arrest warrant for his alleged role in the April 17 death of Abreu Quezada, 40. Police identify Metz Cruz as the assailant who fatally stabbed Abreu Quezada following a traffic dispute in Santiago. Seven other individuals are already facing charges in connection with the crime. The investigation suggests a motorcycle blocked Abreu Quezada's truck, initiating a chase that ended in the fatal stabbing at the Santiago courthouse parking lot.

Dominican authorities are working to extradite Metz Cruz to face justice. While no formal extradition treaty exists between the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, cooperation is facilitated through international bodies like Interpol. Metz Cruz is also involved in a separate legal case from 2023, where he is accused of shooting and injuring National Police Sergeant Christopher Almánzar García. He failed to appear for his trial in that case, leading to a default judgment against him.
