Fujimori Government Prioritizes Reducing Insecurity and Preparing Peru for Disasters

Peru's Prime Minister Luis Galarreta presented the government's general policy for 2026-2031 to the Chamber of Deputies, highlighting key priorities under President Keiko Fujimori's administration. The agenda centers on significantly reducing citizen insecurity and enhancing preparedness for natural disasters, alongside boosting productivity and strengthening democratic governance.

Galarreta asserted that the state was received in "total disorder" and overwhelmed by national challenges due to a lack of leadership. The government's strategy will concentrate efforts on combating high-impact crimes such as extortion, contract killings, organized crime, drug trafficking, and illegal economies. This includes identifying irregular foreign nationals and constructing high-security prisons.

Addressing natural disasters, Peru has established a National Risk Management Commission for the El Niño phenomenon, anticipating a strong to very strong event in the coming months. Priority is given to cleaning riverbeds at 536 critical points to mitigate flood risks from heavy rains. The government will also finance measures to protect fisheries and restructure debt for scallop farmers due to rising sea temperatures.

Further initiatives include strengthening the armed forces' search and rescue capabilities, establishing air and sea bridges for disaster relief, and introducing a Performance Incentive Fund to reward regional governments for progress in reducing anemia and chronic child malnutrition, improving maternal mortality rates, and ensuring access to education and safe water. The administration also aims to strengthen integrated health networks and combat child labor, particularly in rural areas.
