Fujimori thanks 14 former Ibero-American presidents for backing in Peru's election runoff

Peruvian presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori has publicly thanked 14 former Ibero-American presidents for their endorsement in the upcoming election runoff. The support comes from the "Libertad y Democracia" (Liberty and Democracy) group, a collective of former leaders who have voiced concerns about the direction of some regional governments.

Former Colombian President Iván Duque announced the group's backing for Fujimori, who is set to face leftist candidate Roberto Sánchez in the second round of elections on Sunday, June 7. Fujimori, the political heir of former President Alberto Fujimori, shared a message from Duque via her social media account, emphasizing that the support reaffirms her "democratic conviction" and commitment to "liberty, the rule of law, and the development of our country."

The "Libertad y Democracia" group issued a letter urging Peruvians to support Fujimori, characterizing her candidacy as an alternative to "radical left projects" that they claim have caused "serious damage" to democracies across Latin America. Signatories include prominent former leaders such as Mariano Rajoy of Spain, Felipe Calderón of Mexico, Mauricio Macri of Argentina, and Guillermo Lasso of Ecuador, among others.

Fujimori stated that she receives this backing with responsibility and renewed determination to work towards a "more secure, orderly, and united Peru." She also reaffirmed her commitment to the constitution, democratic alternation of power, and the balance of governmental branches.
