Funeral director's confession: 'This is why I still fear death after 27 years working with the deceased'

For 27 years, Debbie Holmwood has worked as a funeral director, a career path she embraced after experiencing the profound impact funeral directors had on her family following the deaths of her grandparents.

Despite her extensive experience with mortality, Holmwood admits she still harbors a fear of death. This apprehension extends to her own end and the potential loss of loved ones. However, she finds solace and purpose in her work, recognizing that she assists people during their most difficult moments. She initially trained as a cosmetologist and even did makeup for weddings before a personal tragedy redirected her professional aspirations.

I'm still afraid. In the beginning, I felt closer to my grandparents, but since we don't know what awaits us, I guess I'm afraid.

Holmwood's role involves preserving and preparing bodies, often for viewings or funerals. This includes embalming and ensuring the deceased looks presentable for their families' final goodbyes. She acknowledges that her profession confronts death more frequently than most, yet the awareness that she can offer support to others provides a sense of comfort.

Initially, she concealed her profession, fearing judgment and misconceptions about her character. However, as she entered her forties and fifties, her perspective shifted. She now openly expresses pride in her work, particularly moved by the gratitude she receives from families she has helped. While many find her job unusual, Holmwood views it as her calling, believing she is meant to restore dignity to the deceased and ease the pain of their families.
