Funeral held for teenager killed in M9 motorway crash

The Holy Family Church in Carlow was filled with a "deep sense of sadness and loss" as mourners gathered for the funeral of Jeremy O'Brien, one of five teenagers killed in a tragic M9 motorway collision. Parish Priest Fr Tom Little acknowledged the profound grief, stating that the accident had irrevocably changed multiple lives, leaving families to cope with "an empty place at their table."

The collision occurred in the early hours of Sunday, August 16, when the car carrying the five teenagers veered onto the wrong side of the M9 motorway. The impact left four occupants of the other vehicle, including three sisters and a seven-year-old boy, critically or seriously injured. The community has been holding prayer vigils for those injured, with Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin Denis Nulty urging careful language and social media use during this sensitive time.

Funerals for three other victims, 15-year-old Joe Carthy and 17-year-olds Alex McCarthy and Kamil Pustkowski, were held on Friday. The funeral for 17-year-old Jack Kennedy is scheduled for Tuesday. Jeremy O'Brien was laid to rest in St Mary's Cemetery following his funeral mass. The incident has cast a pall over the region, highlighting the devastating consequences of road accidents.
