'Fury' at Tarling death as cycling union calls for better helmets

The cycling community is reeling from the death of 19-year-old British rider Fin Tarling during the Volta a Portugal. Tarling, a rider for NSN Cycling, reportedly collided with a vehicle unrelated to the race. The Cyclistes Professionnels Associes (CPA) union expressed profound grief and anger over the incident, stating, "It is not right that a young athlete's life should end this way, and we are furious that even today it is still not possible to prevent such serious accidents."

CPA president Adam Hansen highlighted the need for enhanced helmet safety, noting that cyclists are now reaching unprecedented speeds. Modern racing is characterized by a "full gas from the word go" approach, as riders constantly seek marginal gains. This intensity has led to increased fatalities, with six riders dying in road races over the past three years alone. The average speed in races like the Tour de France has also broken records, pushing the limits of rider safety.

Tarling, the younger brother of professional cyclist Josh Tarling, was part of a new generation of British riders achieving success on the world stage. He had recently finished strongly in the time trial portion of the race. His parents, Michael and Dawn, were known to be deeply involved in his cycling career, even establishing their own team.

An investigation into the "collision between the cyclist and a light goods vehicle" has been launched by the National Republican Guard in Portugal. However, Portuguese media reports suggest the driver involved is unlikely to face charges. Organizers are reportedly considering a tribute to Tarling at the upcoming men's Tour of Britain.
