Future of Ukraine's Army Chief uncertain amid defense minister crisis

The future of Ukrainian Army Chief Oleksandr Syrsky hangs in the balance as President Volodymyr Zelensky navigates a crisis sparked by the dismissal of Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. Syrsky faces significant pressure, with public protests demanding his removal. Demonstrators view him as the primary impediment to the reforms championed by Umerov. Recent revelations have surfaced regarding a dispute between the two officials. Serhiy Sternenko, a former advisor to the ousted minister, indicated on Monday that Zelensky would make a decision regarding Syrsky's tenure either today or Tuesday. Sources within the Presidential Office and the government have informed the Ukrainian portal Liga.net that Zelensky is reviewing approximately 11 officers as potential replacements for the Army Chief, a role Syrsky assumed in February 2024. On Monday, Zelensky continued a series of meetings with senior military commanders, including Deputy Chief of Staff Volodymyr Horbatiuk, Commander of the Third Corps Andriy Biletskyi, Head of the "Khartia" Corps Ihor Obolenskyi, Head of Air Assault Troops Oleh Apostol, and the widely respected General Mykhailo Drapatyi. Drapatyi is considered a potential successor to Syrsky. Following Umerov's dismissal, several high-ranking officers publicly acknowledged systemic issues within the Armed Forces. Syrsky's operational methods have drawn criticism from some former soldiers, such as veteran Dmytro Koziatynskyi, a protest co-organizer in Kyiv. Additionally, Deputy Commander of the Azov Regiment Bohdan Krotsevych has alleged that Syrsky's emphasis on infantry assaults has resulted in "thousands of lost lives" at the front. However, some prominent officers have publicly backed Syrsky. Commander of the Air Force, General Anatoliy Krivonozhko, joined the heads of Air Assault Troops and the Navy in acknowledging Umerov's contributions to military modernization while simultaneously endorsing Syrsky. Krivonozhko urged for de-escalation, warning that "open confrontation and a tense internal situation in the country undermine confidence in military and political leadership both within Ukrainian society and among foreign partners, which can have negative consequences."
