Fwusow Company Plant Catches Fire Amid Carcinogenic Oil Scandal; Residents Suspect Evidence Destruction

Fwusow Company's plant in Taichung has been hit by a fire, occurring shortly after the company became embroiled in a controversy over carcinogenic oil. The incident has fueled public concern and online discussion, with some netizens urging Mayor Lu Shiow-yen to investigate.

The fire broke out around 9 AM, reportedly originating from a washing bucket on the sixth floor of the plant. The Taichung City Fire Bureau responded promptly, dispatching multiple units to the scene. The blaze was extinguished by 9:51 AM, with no injuries or fatalities reported. The affected washing bucket sustained damage, and the fire covered an area of approximately 3 square meters.

Thick black smoke and an unpleasant odor emanating from the factory prompted concerns among local residents about severe air pollution. Some residents questioned whether the fire was an attempt to destroy evidence, with one resident stating, "They get fined and then it burns?" Others voiced suspicions that the plant might be burning waste oil, citing frequent occurrences of unusual odors and black smoke.

In response to the incident, the Taichung City Government stated that the fire occurred during equipment maintenance at the Fwusow Company's feed mill in Shalu District. The Environmental Protection Bureau confirmed that its smoke detection system identified the black smoke at 9:34 AM and dispatched investigators. The bureau is currently investigating whether the fire resulted from the company's negligence, which could lead to fines under the Air Pollution Control Act.
