Gadjah Mada University Develops Innovative Cosmetic Scrub Using South Sea Salt

A research team from the Center for Marine Resources and Technology Studies at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta has pioneered a new cosmetic product: a body scrub made from South Sea salt. Dubbed Lumare, meaning "Light from the Sea," the product's primary ingredient is salt sourced from the southern coast, recognized for its clean and natural characteristics.

Leni Sophia Heliani, the lead researcher and a lecturer in Geodesy Engineering at UGM, explained that the innovation seeks to add value to local salt farmers' commodities through diversification into high-value economic products. "In this cosmetic product innovation, salt acts as an exfoliant, removing dead skin cells and impurities from the skin's surface," Leni stated.

This development supports the Indonesian government's initiative to encourage the downstream processing of national salt into value-added goods. The choice of natural ingredients from the southern coast salt, processed cleanly and naturally, positions Lumare as a potential premium cosmetic ingredient. Heliani noted the growing consumer trend towards natural, safe, and environmentally friendly body care products.

The Lumare Salt Body Scrub uses high-quality sea salt from southern coast salt farmers as its main natural exfoliant. The product has undergone dermatological testing to ensure its safety for skin use. The Head of the Maritime and Fisheries Office of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, R. Hery Sulistio Hermawan, praised the UGM team's efforts, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between universities, government, businesses, and the community to ensure the research benefits society broadly.
