Ganghwa's Jeongjoksan Jeondeungsa Temple Area to Become National 'Scenic Spot'

The area surrounding Jeondeungsa Temple in Jeongjoksan, Ganghwa, a site of numerous historical events including a temporary royal palace and a victory site during the Byeonginyangyo conflict, is poised for designation as a national natural heritage 'Scenic Spot'.

The Cultural Heritage Administration announced its intention to designate 'The Area of Jeongjoksan Jeondeungsa Temple in Ganghwa' as a scenic spot. The administration highlighted the area's high value as a cultural landscape, noting the natural terrain of Jeongjoksan mountain harmoniously integrates with man-made elements such as Samrangseong Fortress, Jeondeungsa Temple, the Jeongjoksan Historical Archives, temple forests, and ancient paths.

Historically, the Jeongjoksan area served as a temporary palace site for Goryeo Dynasty kings, a center for national Buddhist rituals, and housed the Joseon Dynasty's historical archives and the Seonwonbogak, which stored royal genealogies. Its significance is also documented in historical texts like 'Goryeosa' and 'Joseon Wangjo Sillok,' as well as in old maps that depict the history and landscape of Jeongjoksan and Jeondeungsa Temple.

The Cultural Heritage Administration will now gather public opinions for 30 days. Following this period, the designation will proceed after deliberation by the Cultural Heritage Committee.
