Gangneung to launch 'Dalbit Art Show' with giant LED moon sculpture

Gangneung is preparing to unveil the 'Dalbit Art Show' on September 1, centered around a massive LED moon sculpture. This installation, measuring 10 meters in diameter, will be the largest of its kind in South Korea and will serve as the focal point for an immersive media art performance.

The art show will incorporate an interactive program called 'Finding My Moon,' utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technology. This program generates personalized images for visitors: those under 16 will receive an image representing their "future self," while those 16 and older will receive an image of their "childhood self." These images can be saved to smartphones, and visitors who collect stamps around Gyeongpo Lake can view their images on the main LED moon screen, offering a unique shared experience. The 'Dalbit Art Show' is free and open to the public without prior reservation.

The choice of Gyeongpo Ecological Reservoir as the location is rooted in local legend. Gyeongpo Lake has long been known as the "Lake of Five Moons," with a tale describing how one can see five moons from the Gyeongpodae Pavilion: the moon in the sky, the moon on the sea, the moon on the lake, the moon in a wine glass, and the moon reflected in a loved one's eyes. The lake itself is also called 'Gyeongho' due to its clear, mirror-like surface.

Gangneung City has invested 5.1 billion won in the 'Dalbit Art Show' project. City officials anticipate that this new nighttime attraction, complementing existing daytime tourist spots like Ojukheon and SeonGyoJang, will significantly increase visitor stays. This, in turn, is expected to boost revenue for local businesses, including accommodations, restaurants, and small shops, thereby revitalizing the regional economy. Mayor Kim Joong-nam stated the city aims to establish the ecological reservoir as a new landmark, offering a transition from daytime traditional boat tours to the nighttime 'Dalbit Art Show,' injecting vitality into Gangneung.
